Kidron Valley

The fascinating city of Jerusalem has been of deep religious significance to Jews, Christians and Muslims for thousands of years.

All the holiest sites in the world are found within the city walls, including the Church of the Holy Sepulcher,

Western Wall and Al Aqsa Mosque.

Its colorful markets and bazaars, and its winding alleyways are a spectacular and enduring reminder of its historical and cultural past.

Jerusalem is also notable for its archeological highlights, and a tour of the Kidron Valley is recommended when on a trip in Israel.

Known to be the oldest district of Jerusalem, the Valley features archeological remains dating back more than 4000 years, and is where the City of David first sprung up.

The Valley is an area of outstanding natural beauty as well as religious and historical sites and is situated between Temple Mount and the Mount of Olives.

Visitors on a trip in Israel can view several graves and tombs here, most notably the tomb of the Virgin Mary and the Tomb of Absalom, the unusual dome-shaped monument is one of the most famous in the valley.

The Kidron Valley is also home to the Garden of Gethsemane, which is found at the base of the Mount of Olives – a lush oasis where it is said Jesus and his disciples prayed together on the night before his crucifixion.

The beautiful olive trees are believed to be nearly a thousand years old. The Church of All Nations is also worth a visit to the Kidron Valley – a church constructed in the 1920s over the remains of a Crusader chapel.

Jerusalem’s Kidron Valley is accessible via the Lion’s Gate in the Old City – and is a perfect place for a morning’s exploration.
